Lawn: A Piece of work worth every effort

For many of us, our home truly is our sanctuary. We strive to make our homes as warm, welcoming, and beautiful as possible—for ourselves and our community, especially as homeowners. In this sense, the lawn in our front yard is often the first thing we see. It plays a significant role in the appearance our home presents to the world and offers us an easily accessible way to connect with nature amidst urban life.

Although it requires work, it is a beautiful project that we know will pay off. But it will take time. Choosing the DIY route offers a great opportunity to reconnect with manual work and the rhythms and processes of nature, which is a refreshing change from our otherwise overstimulated daily lives.

Crystal Tip: A well-maintained lawn may not “increase your value,” but it can certainly put your home head & shoulders above others, especially if you want to sell. Buyer interest most often starts with how your home looks from the street. Great curb appeal draws a buyer inside! If you enjoy being outside and are considering making your lawn stand out, know that it can significantly enhance your property while improving your quality of life and adding to your personal enjoyment. … You’re welcome : )

Diagnosing your lawn: DIY or hire experts?

Whether to care for your lawn yourself or hire experts depends on your budget and willingness to learn and engage in this hands-on activity. While it’s not overly difficult, there is a learning curve, which means dedicating time. Additionally, consider the costs of lawn care products and professional services for regular care if your schedule is tight.

Gardening in the winter?

Nature follows its own rhythms, and if we observe carefully, we can work with it to create thriving conditions. Even if winter is not your lawn grass’ favorite season, it is optimal to make resources available for it to use when it wakes up from a long season of cold.

Setting up your garden for success at the end of winter ensures it thrives in optimal summer temperatures. From mid-February to March, you can prepare the soil and begin steps that will pay off throughout the summer.

Timing is everything: South Carolina’s best times for gardening action

According to Wingard’s Market’s DIY Lawn Maintenance guide, here are some key dates to consider when planning for year-round care:

Weed Control: It is ideal to start applying the right products for weed control between February 15 and March 15. Depending on your garden’s needs, you might only use a general weed control product or add a second, more targeted application 10 to 14 days later.

Nourishment: From April to May, after mowing your lawn twice, start fertilizing. The type of product you use will depend on your grass type (e.g., St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Centipede & Zoysia).

Enhancing greenness: Between June and July, use products containing Chelated Iron to quickly green up your lawn. St. Augustine grass typically responds better in June, while Bermuda, Centipede, and Zoysia are better suited for July applications.

Preparing for Winter: Between September 15 and October 15, prepare your lawn for winter to promote faster recovery the following year. After a season of vibrant colors and optimal growth, your grass will need resources to stay healthy and combat weeds through the winter.

Crystal Tip: If you have questions during the process or need help choosing specific products, don’t hesitate to consult the experts. This will save you time and money while accelerating your learning curve.

In the Lexington area of South Carolina, I highly recommend visiting Wally Steinhouser’s gardening and landscape center, Wingard’s Market.

“Can I fertilize my lawn in February?”

This is a common question. Wingard’s Market’s guide advises waiting until spring, between March and April, to ensure the grass has fully emerged from dormancy and is ready to absorb and utilize the fertilizer.

In today’s world of constant screens and stimulation, manual activities like gardening can be incredibly beneficial. Consider this an invitation to create a green space not just for your community but also for your family’s enjoyment.

The joy awaits both in the process and the results. As you now know, February is a great time to start!
